Insurance is one of those things that becomes particularly important when you’re living, travelling or buying property abroad โ but it’s also an area where the right choice depends very much on your circumstances.
Are you visiting a country for a few weeks? Moving abroad permanently? Working remotely while travelling between countries? Or looking for health or expat insurance once you’ve settled overseas?
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. I’ve included a few providers below that I believe are worth considering, based on the types of cover they offer.
Some of the links on this page are affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission if you purchase through them, at no additional cost to you.
If you’re looking for more personalised advice, I’d also recommend speaking with an experienced insurance professional who can assess your individual circumstances and help you find the right type of cover. Send me an email wouter@propertyinvestblog.com and I can put you in touch.
โ๏ธ Travel Insurance
Travel insurance can provide useful protection when you’re travelling abroad, particularly for unexpected medical expenses, cancellations and other problems that can arise during a trip.
VisitorsCoverage
VisitorsCoverage provides travel insurance for international travellers and offers a range of plans depending on your destination and circumstances.
It’s an option worth considering if you’re travelling abroad and want to arrange travel insurance before you leave.
EKTA
EKTA provides insurance for people travelling or going abroad, with policies available to people aged 3 to 85.
It can be another option to consider when you’re comparing travel insurance for an international trip.
๐ Health & Expat Insurance
If you’re spending much longer abroad or relocating permanently, your insurance needs can be quite different from those of a short-term traveller.
Health and expat insurance can be particularly important when you’re planning to make another country your home.
SafetyWing
SafetyWing provides health insurance aimed at digital nomads and people working remotely.
If you’re planning a flexible lifestyle abroad or expect to spend significant periods travelling while working remotely, it’s a provider worth looking at.
๐ฉบ Choosing the Right Insurance
Insurance is one area where I wouldn’t simply choose the cheapest option.
Before taking out a policy, look carefully at what’s covered, what’s excluded, the excess, maximum claim amounts and whether the policy is appropriate for the country you’re visiting or living in.
Your circumstances also matter. The right policy for someone taking a two-week holiday can be very different from what’s appropriate for someone retiring abroad or spending most of the year outside their home country.
If you’re unsure about what you need, getting advice from an experienced insurance professional can be worthwhile. Let me know by emailing me wouter@propertyinvestblog.com and I will connect you with the best suitable advisor.
