A leisurely stroll through the city of Plovdiv

Some years ago, I stayed in Plovdiv for a few days to visit a trade show. A leisurely stroll through Plovdiv turned into a great experience thanks to the city’s blend of history, culture, and vibrant street life. I remember starting my walk at one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the ancient Roman Theatre. There were no performances on that day, but it is still used for shows today.

After that, I particularly enjoyed wandering through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, where you’ll find a mix of Bulgarian Renaissance architecture, art galleries, and museums.

Of course, I had to stop at one of the many traditional Bulgarian restaurants to try local dishes like banitsa (a traditional pastry), shopska salad (a salad made in the colours of the Bulgarian flag), or kavarma (a pork and vegetable stew).

In the evening the city was buzzing with all its bars, live music venues, and nightclubs. I loved the vibe of Plovdiv.

Its idyllic location adds to the above mentioned positives. Plovdiv is surrounded by – and was originally built on – several hills and boasts views of higher mountains in the distance.
